Two highly accurate thermometers are mounted inside; one wet bulb thermometer determines relative humidity. The bulb end is covered with a cotton wick which is saturated with water before the unit is turned on. The other thermometer is a so-called dry bulb thermometer that has been painted with a high emissivity (heat attracting) black coating at the end to measure radiation temperatures.
Both lie in a channel through which air is circulated by means of a battery operated fan motor. This circulation removes evaporated moisture from the wet bulb thermometer wick depending on the amount of moisture in the air.
A plexi-glass window above the black dry bulb, exposes it to impingements from any thermally radiated source; i.e.: Sun rays, incandescent lamps, fires, reflecting surfaces and electrical energy.
