Energy Saving Trust award Eltek significant contract
January 2006. A significant contract for the monitoring of domestic hot water usage patterns has been awarded to Eltek. Energy Saving Trust placed the order with Eltek due to our considerable expertise in data logging and environmental monitoring and in particular our ability to customise the design to precisely meet the project objectives.
Domestic hot water heating is a significant user of energy in UK and offers the opportunity to reduce energy usage if better engineered.
Up to 100 domestic hot water systems throughout UK will be monitored over a one year period. The collected data will be independently analysed and will lead to a better understanding of hot water usage. The last such study was conducted in the late 1970s!
This will lead to the design of more efficient hot water heating systems with the ultimate aim of reducing the amount of energy needed leading to a reduction of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
The system uses radio connected sensors installed at the point of use, e.g. shower, sink etc, and self contained data loggers enabling a discrete and non intrusive domestic installation. Data is down loaded remotely using GSM.

Eltek at the Natural History Museum -
Hosted for the first time outside North America by the Natural History Museum in London, the 20th Anniversary meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) attracted over 200 participants from the world's leading Natural History Museums; the biggest meeting held in this field.
Eltek was pleased to be a Silver sponsor of the event, hosting the first night's informal gathering at the Darwin Centre.
Eltek exhibited GenII and the new Darca Heritage software at the continuous trade show for the duration of the main conference (14th to 16th June). We were delighted by the level of interest in our GenII radio system shown by the collections conservators from such auspicious institutions as the Smithsonian, Peabody in the USA to their counterparts in Europe and even New Zealand.
The need for environmental monitoring – particularly with the advent of banning of traditional pest control chemicals and gases - has resulted in more scientific strategies being developed, which in turn relies on immediate and accurate data about the environment of the installation. Eltek, together with the collection mangers, is working towards comprehensive and flexible monitoring using our GenII radio system, for both permanent systems and temporary study projects.
The theme was about developing standards for the industry and a very wide range of lectures and workshops was held for this purpose.

Eltek 1000 Series Loggers
Many of you will have received a notice from Grant Instruments stating that the Grant SQ1000 series will be withdrawn from their price list, effective from 30th June 2005.
Please note that does not affect the availability of customised 1000 series data loggers and derivatives or Darca software from Eltek.
Eltek continues to develop and support an extremely wide range of loggers based on the 1000 series for the increasing and divergent demands of the data logger market.
Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge chooses Eltek
The Fitzwilliam Museum chose the Eltek GenII system to monitor the environment of the museum to ensure that the exhibits are in a controlled and non damaging environment. The system consists of 54 x GC-10 (temp and RH) plus 7 x GL-70 (temp, RH, visible light and UV) making a total of 159 sensor channels - big by any manufacturer's standards. Darca Heritage software permits zoning of the data collection (e.g. data from the Egyptology section) and analysis for the specialist conservator.
The site is approximately one square kilometre but in actual surface area is many times greater than this as it consists of up to 4 levels, some basement - all exacerbated by the fact the building is a substantial Victorian stone built structure with sympathetic modern construction extensions. Radio coverage was not a problem using repeaters to fill in the radio black spots.
Eltek worked in close association with the customer who was particularly keen to make sure the data collected was made as meaningful as possible to the museum - which resulted in the development and supply of Darca Heritage software.

Eltek Telemetry in use at Thamesmead Ecopark - A sustainable social housing project
A practical housing project of the future was opened at Thamesmead Ecopark November 29th 2002.
DHV, the international Dutch consultancy specialising is sustainable solutions, together with Splinter Architects have designed a social housing project for Gallions Housing Association of London.
The Thamesmead project includes a development of 39 houses and aims to benefit both the environment and residents equally. Emphasis is placed on the best use of energy by careful selection of building materials and technology to provide a high level of comfort to the occupants.
The environment of the selected homes or "comfort level" is continuously monitored during the evaluation period. This data is relayed to the on-site Visitor Centre, where the data will be analysed during the twelve month study period and checked against predicted values.
Skyview, experts at weather monitoring, was contracted to provide the weather and home environmental monitoring equipment. Eltek was selected to design, commission and install the sensors and loggers to gather the all important house "comfort level" data, which includes temperature, humidity, electricity use, water use and heat output.
Skyview project manger Ian Tomkins said "Initially we had planned to use conventional wired in logging across the site but the cost and disruption was a sticking point. Eltek provided us with an elegant and professional telemetry solution", Skyview say the ease of installation - as radio was so easy to install, the absence of disruption during the busy commissioning phase of the project and the reliability together with the accuracy of data collected was really impressive.
Eltek is indeed pleased to be associated with such a visionary project and hopes that this model will be the first of many practical schemes throughout the UK.

SMS Texting is not only the province of teenagers!
Now you can have your Squirrel text you when something's wrong. Now a text message if the system is in alarm can be sent to up to 10 mobile telephone numbers using the Wavetek M1306B GSM modem:
- The text message is designed to indicate channels which have strayed outside the alarm thresholds.
- The message contains the logger number, the channel identifier, the current reading and whether the reading is high or low.
- The channel identifier can be the channel number or a text identifying the particular channel.
- To avoid sending multiple SMS messages, the logger has the facility to repeat the message at predetermined intervals if the channel is still in alarm. In addition, the time of the messages can be specified. So as well as sending a message as soon as the alarm is asserted, the logger repeats the message at say every 8 hours from 10.00am.
- Multiple alarms on several channels are all sent in the same text message.
The SMS Specification Page contains more in-depth information about how the SMS messages are sent and what they contain.
All Squirrels with a serial number greater than 5000 and running Darca Plus v2 or greater can be equipped with the feature by simply installing the "Text" kit that comprises the firm ware and the latest version of Darca Plus v2.0.25 or greater.
For users running Darca Plus v1 or Darca Lite it will be necessary to upgrade to Darca Plus v2 or greater. Thereafter the "Text" kit can be installed.
For Squirrels with a serial number less than 5000 that require Text facility please contact Eltek to advise the best route to providing the feature.
The GSM modem kit type GSM-mdm can be ordered from Eltek and is delivered complete with antenna. A SIM card will be required and can be obtained from your Service Provider, alternatively ELTEK can supply the SIM card and install it in the modem, thereby minimising your start up time and assuring immediate connection to the network
