Best for moderate to high wind 9 mph (4 m/s) and above
Whisper 100 provides dependable energy for remote homes, telecommunications sites and rural applications in moderate to extreme environments. Reliable operation by thousands of customers makes Whisper 100 the top selling small wind turbine in its class. Assuming a 12 mph (5.4 m/s) average wind, a Whisper 100 will produce 100 kWh per month.
The Whisper 100 is one of the quietest wind turbines ever tested by the National Renewable Energy Labs. Sound Report.
In addition to its patented smooth acting side furling design, the Whisper 100 has a number of new features that make it ideal for any new or existing photovoltaic system.
A new four bearing spindle for a smoother operation and longer life
An upgraded Yaw shaft that more efficiently delivers current to your batteries
New bronze bushing and larger diameter furling pin for smoother furling action
New castings that allow easy access to the stator for changing voltage Included with every whisper is our new Whisper Controller.
Whisper Controller
Unlike many other small wind systems, the Whisper 100 ships with a controller that includes a diversion load to ensure quiet safe operation of your wind turbine when the batteries are charged.
It installs in minutes and it protects both your wind turbine and battery. The Whisper Controller fits easily inside your battery room. Add the optional LCD display and you will instantly receive real time data on the performance of your Whisper 100.
The display can be mounted on the controller or up to 1000 feet (300 meters) away letting you know what is happening. You can even add an anemometer to your controller and now you can measure wind speed and compare it to the output to make sure you are getting the most from your Whisper 100.
Wind as easy to use as photovoltaics
The Whisper 100 is designed for even the novice. This turbine installs in just a few hours with no welding, no concrete or cranes. Our engineers designed the work out of installing wind turbines.
Solar and wind work together
Solar and wind resources often compliment each other. Generally when it is sunny it is calm and when it is cloudy it is windy. This complimentary effect is even greater during seasonal changes. During the winter and spring when the sun is at its least exposure, the wind is at it highest. A Whisper 100 during these periods is essential to keep your batteries charged and your lights on.
Maximum output in any wind
Exclusive to the Whisper, the side-furling Angle-Governor protects the turbine in high winds by turning the alternator and blades out of the wind, reducing turbine exposure. Unlike other wind turbines that lose as much as 80% of their output when furled, the Angle-Governor allows the Whisper to achieve maximum output in any wind.
Towers for Whisper 100, Whisper 200 and Whisper 500 Small Wind Turbines
Southwest Windpower offers tower kits that are easy and safe to install. Our kits don't require welding or machining – you just need to obtain pipe material and power wires. We sell anchors separately. Only the Whisper 500 towers require excavation or concrete work.
All of Southwest Windpower¡¯s guyed tower kits include everything you need except: 1) Pipe material 2) Anchors 3) Power wires
To keep your costs low and to consider site variables, these components should be purchased locally. When selecting the materials for the construction of your tower, please consider the following:
Pipe Material: For most conditions, we recommend a ¡°schedule 40¡± pipe material. This offers a wall thickness of 0.125 inches, which is strong enough to resist most wind conditions. If you are using fence pipe material, make sure you ask for ¡°SS40¡±. If you live in an environment were your winds will never exceed 80 mph (140 km) then we suggest using a thinner wall material such as a ¡°schedule 20¡±. In conduit material, this is called ¡°SS20¡±.
Anchors: The anchors are by far the most difficult part of installing a tower. Once you have them in the ground, a tower installation gets really easy. There are various soil materials that you should consider prior to installing your tower. The type of anchor should also vary. Our owner manuals have recommendations based on soil type.
Power wires: Because of the size of turbine and variable length from the turbine to your batteries/inverter, it is impossible to know the proper wire size. Once you have understood the distance from the turbine to the battery, refer to the wind turbine¡¯s owners manual for the proper wire size. Be sure to select the right type of wire for your environment.
VERY IMPORTANT: Prior to the installation of your tower, read the owners manual thoroughly and make sure you understand the environmental conditions at your site prior to purchasing materials. We offer manuals that are free to download and review prior to purchase.
