Immediate, on-site results Easy-to-read color changeHighly sensitive and selective Exposure data read directly from badgeImmediate response for short-term exposure measurements Measure TWA exposuresPatented design minimizes effects of humidity and air velocityLight-weight and cost effective for personnel and area monitoring No laboratory analysis neededAvailable for 20 different chemicals

Principle of Operation

The ChormAir badge is a colorimetric direct-read monitor. It relies on the principle of diffision; therefore requires no pump to operate. Unlike traditional diffusion tubes, the patented design of the ChromAir badge provides a short and constant diffusion path irrespective of the sampling time or concentration of the contaminant. This unique feature provides accurate results immediately and throughout the sampling period.
The ChromAir monitor provides the user with six exposure levels*. Most ChromAir badges indicate from 1/10 to 2 times the time-weighted-average for an eight hour work period. The scale** printed on the badge and color comparator is based on exposure dose [parts per million times hour (ppm¡¤hr)]. To determine the average concentration, the user locates the highest cell with a color change and divides the corresponding dose level (ppm¡¤hr) by the sampling time in hours (hr).
EXAMPLE: If the sampling time is 2 hours and the badge reads 40 ppm¡¤hr, the average concentration is determined by: 40 ppm¡¤hr/2hr. Therefore, the average concentration is 20 ppm.

* The ChromAir mercury and glutaraldehyde badges have five levels.
** The ChromAir mercury badge scale is in mg/m3¡¤hr. The glutaraldehyde badge is for STEL sampling only.

Color Comparators

For higher resolution and wider range, the ChromAir badge may be used with the ChromAir color comparator. The scale on the color comparator identically matches the color formed on the ChromAir badge. ChromAir color comparators are available for the following compounds:

Applications:
The ChromAir formaldehyde badge may be used for personnel or area monitoring for exposure times ranging from 15 minutes to 2 days. For higher resolution, the ChromAir formaldehyde badge may be used in conjunction with the ChromAir formaldehdye color comparator (part number: 384001).

Cross Interferences:
Acrolein and the aldehydes that exist in cigarette smoke react with approximately the same sensitivity. It is impossible to monitor formaldehyde in the presence of cigarette smoke. The ChromAir formaldehyde badge was treated in atmospheres containing at least two times the OSHA PEL for the following substances: alcohols (methanol and ethanol), aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene and xylene), halogenated hydrocarbons (chloroform, methylene chloride and carbon tetrachloride), ammonia, carbon monoxide, chlorine, glutaraldehyde, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, phenol and sulfur dioxide. These substances showed no effect on the performance of the ChromAir formaldehyde badge. No other interferences are known.

Operating Instructions

¡¡

  1. Remove the pouch from the refrigerator and warm to room temperature.
  2. Remove the badge from the protective pouch.
  3. Enter all pertinent information on the I.D. label before monitoring is started (i.e. name, location, date and start time).
  4. Remove the activation label where applicable.
  5. For personnel monitoring, attach the badge near the user's breathing zone (i.e. collar) with the front side exposed to the surrounding atmosphere.
  6. For area monitoring, attach the badge to a stand and mount in a centralized area with the front side exposed to the surrounding atmosphere.
  7. Check the back side of the badge periodically to determine the exposure dose (ppm¡¤hr).
  8. To read the badge, locate the highest level cell with a color change.
  9. To obtain the average concentration (ppm) in the surrounding atmosphere, divide the exposure dose (ppm¡¤hr) by the exposure time in hours (hr). EXAMPLE: If the sampling time is 2 hours and the badge reads 4 ppm¡¤hr, the average concentration is determinded by: 4 ppm¡¤hr/2 hr. Therefore the average concentration is 2 ppm.

¡¡

The calculation to obtain the average concentration is not necessary when using the ChromAir STEL glutaraldehyde badge. Since this badge is a STEL badge and can only be used for a 15 minute monitoring time, the scale on the badge is in ppm.

The scale on the ChromAir mercury badge is in mg/m3¡¤hr. Use the same calculation as in number 9. Your results will be in mg/m3.
